As professionals in the fields of marketing, publishing, graphic design and technology we often heard the complaints of commercial enterprises struggling to understand and navigate the maze of emerging mobile devices.  The speed at which smartphone and tablet technology has grown is staggering.  In the last five years alone the number of smartphone owners in the U.S. has grown from 9 million to 120 million. Globally, there are now as many active mobile phone connections in the world as people -- more than 7 billion.

The numbers are mind-boggling.  But equally overwhelming are the advances in capabilities of these devices.  They can tell you where you are and where you are going.  They can produce and present photos and video.  They can read bar codes that instantly trigger events.  They can connect you with other devices anywhere in the world … all with a thin rectangular device that fits in the palm of your hand.
